| Turner awarded contract for Linac Coherent Light Source Project Turner Construction Company’s San Jose office has been awarded a contract by Stanford University representing $75 million in construction value to create research and experimental space for The Linac Coherent Light Source Project (LCLS), financed by the U.S. Department of Energy, at Stanford University’s Linear Accelerator Center in Palo Alto, Calif. Stanford’s $400 million LCLS Project will help scientists to understand the movements and changes of atoms, molecules and materials that occur within fractions of a second through the use of a new laser. In order to create a space suitable to house the laser, Turner will construct a one-half mile extension of an already-existing research tunnel, complete with 6-ft. thick concrete walls in areas where radiation is a concern, and install a HVAC system necessary for the temperature-sensitive laser. Turner will apply its aptitude in aircraft hangar construction to create the concrete slabs necessary for the tunnel. The scope of work will also include construction of a 78, 000-sq.-ft. Central Lab Office Complex (CLOC) with six laser laboratories, two levels of underground experimental halls, 350 ft. of tunneled research space and a central utility plant. Completion is scheduled for 2008. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Construction News :: home page |
