| Amec opened the Docklands Light Railway Amec, the international project management and services company, is celebrating a major success with the opening of the new DLR extension from Canning Town to London City Airport and North Woolwich, which has been completed ahead of schedule. The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and Minister for Transport Karen Buck cut the ribbon at London City Airport station and were joined by Colin Jackson, star of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing and a champion hurdler, Lord Coe and Olympic Gold medallist Denise Lewis. The 4.4km route, an important part of the local transport infrastructure for the 2012 Olympics, has been designed and built at a cost of Ј142m by City Airport Rail Enterprises plc (CARE), a joint venture of Amec plc and the Royal Bank of Scotland, as part of a 30-year PFI concession. The extension provides rail connections to the City and to Canary Wharf from London City Airport, one of the fastest growing airports in the UK. The local area will receive a further boost when work is completed on a 2.5km extension from the new terminus (King George V station) under the Thames to Woolwich Arsenal, also being carried out by Amec and which is scheduled to open in early 2009. The combination of both extensions means that Amec will have provided a DLR link from Canning Town to Woolwich Arsenal, via London City Airport, in good time for the 2012 Olympics. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Construction News :: home page |
