Arup & Llewelyn Davies Yeang Awarded

In a ceremony that took place at the Royal Society of Medicine, Arup, the global planning, engineering and design consultancy and Llewelyn Davies Yeang won the British Consultants and Construction Bureau’s (BCCB) Large Consultancy Firm of the Year award in the Visible Projects category.

The BCCB bestowed the honour for the firms’ collaborative effort on the £115 million terminal at Chongqing International Airport, located in southwest China.

The winning project was the first major public development in the region to involve foreign designers. The design of the terminal, based on a mythical Chinese dragon considered to be a symbol of the Chinese race itself, was initially chosen from a panel of six competitors and represented a departure from the traditional airport style.

China’s strict airport engineering codes and rigorous design approval procedures led to an innovative fire engineering strategy developed by Arup. The new method incorporated sprinklers and suppression systems only at locations where a fire hazard exists. In addition, sustainability and energy efficiency were other significant factors in the design and materials selection for the project.
