ILO ruling compromises global contracts

The CFMEU, Australia's main trade union in construction, forestry and forest products, mining and energy production, said that the International Labour Organisation ruling against the Howard Government's construction industrial relations laws pushes Australia outside the mainstream of global labour law.

CFMEU Construction national secretary John Sutton said the decision had the potential to compromise Australian companies' ability to win international tenders.

Mr Sutton urged the Howard Government to take heed of the ILO decision, which calls on the government to revise the construction laws to meet Australia's international treaty obligations around freedom of association.

The ruling comes after labour lawyers warned the Senate warned last week that the Howard Government's WorkChoices laws could lead to Australian being expelled from the ILO.
