Communities Scotland To Begin The Home Farm Project

A £20 million affordable housing project, the biggest ever seen on the Isle of Skye, is about to begin at the Home Farm site in Portree.

Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association has secured the land with an investment of almost £4.5 million from , the Executive's housing and regeneration agency, and £450, 000 from Highlands and Islands Enterprise's (HIE) Community Land Unit.

The project will see 169 affordable homes built over 10 years - a 20 per cent increase in the current total of permanently occupied dwellings in Portree.

The Home Farm project is being built based on the 'Homezone' principles which aim to promote road safety and encourage community interaction. The houses will also benefit from energy efficient heating systems and optimum use of sunlight.

Homestake is Communities Scotland's new shared equity scheme aimed at people on low incomes who wish to be homeowners but cannot pay the full price for a house. Housing associations will part-fund a share in the property and hold a part 'equity stake' in the property with the homeowner.

Forty-one homes are planned during this first phase which is expected to be completed early summer 2007. Ten will be sold through Homestake with 31 designated for social rent.
