solarcentury brings the streetsmart® system to Europe

solarcentury are delighted to announce that 250 streetsmart® systems (solar powered lighting system for street furniture) are to be installed in a major European city in partnership with JCDecaux. The project is believed to be the largest of it’s type in Europe since solarcentury was awarded a contract with JCDecaux (UK) for 380 shelters in Plymouth in 2003. The streetsmart system consists of a solar panel, long life batteries, energy management system and LED lighting unit. Every part of the streetsmart design, with the exception of the batteries, is expected to last the life of the shelter providing a low maintenance alternative to illuminating shelters.

The LED’s will provide 100, 000 hours illumination of 60 lux across the entire footprint of the shelter providing a secure environment for passengers. The solar panels are discreet in design and can be curved to fit the shape of most shelter designs. The panels contain no glass, are vandal resistant and require no maintenance. The unique Energy Management System ensures the maximum light output from the energy available throughout the year.

JCDecaux will also benefit from zero electricity costs for the life of the shelter. The streetsmart system provides an inflation proof source of power, and with no connection to the grid, an annual electrical inspection is not required.

Other benefits include instant on site illumination once the shelter is installed and the flexibility to move shelters as needed, without the need to obtain street works permits and incur disconnection charges.

In addition, each system off-sets 50 kg of CO2 a year reducing JCDecaux’s emissions by 12.5 tonnes of Co2 per year for the life of the contract.

The system can be integrated into a shelter as built or retrofitted on site.
