Cumulus, the exhibition of ceramic prototypes at Cersaie 2005

Today’s students, the young people of the third millennium, will be tomorrow’s designers. In recognition of this, an exhibition of prototypes created for the Cumulus Competition will be staged as part of the Markitecture programme at Cersaie, the International Exhibition of ceramic tiles and bathroom furniture to be held in Bologna from 27 September to 1 October 2005. This competition is promoted by Cumulus (European Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media) and includes the participation of a number of prestigious schools, all in Northern Europe: Ecole Superieure d’Arts Grapiques et d’Architecture Interieure in Paris, the Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, Lund University in Lund, Sweden, and the Estonia Academy of Arts in Tallin.

The students taking part in the competition have been exploring the theme of possible experimentation and new uses of ceramic in the field of design and architecture. This fascinating and very stimulating challenge covers numerous aspects, from mobility to health and well-being infrastructures, from the urban landscape to architectural shells.

The experiments have followed on from specific lessons held at the various European schools under the supervision of project coordinator Michele Capuani, which gave the students the opportunity to improve their knowledge of ceramic products. Through the cooperation of ceramic manufacturers belonging to Assopiastrelle, the selected projects will be developed into the prototypes that will be exhibited during Cersaie 2005. With Cumulus, Cersaie continues its journey into the world of experimentation following the ‘Involucri’ initiatives and the exhibitions organised in recent years in cooperation with the master’s course in ceramic at the Domus Academy in Milan.
