Grace introduces SYNCHRO® chromium reducer

Grace Construction Products announces the commercialization of SYNCHRO chromium reducer additive. The use of SYNCHRO allows cement manufacturers to meet the new EU Directive 2003/53/EC for chromium reduction that became effective in January 2005. This directive limits the water-soluble chromium content of cement in most cases to below 2ppm. Grace Construction Products research scientists began work more than two years ago with the objective of developing an effective liquid product that could be dispersed directly into the cement grinding mill. The SYNCHRO chromium reducer technology, now being used by European cement manufacturers, was the outcome of that effort.

SYNCHRO 100 is a patent pending liquid additive formulated around tin sulphate. It is designed to be inter-ground into cement during the grinding process. Once in the cement, SYNCHRO reduces the level of soluble chromium (VI) ions present when that cement is mixed with water. The SYNCHRO technology has been found to maintain its effectiveness significantly longer than iron-based alternative chemistries once it is added to cement. This better stability provides cement manufacturers with a higher level of confidence against the loss of effectiveness that can occur with the long storage of, for instance, bagged cements. SYNCHRO 100 has been shown in field tests to maintain its effectiveness in cement for up to six months.
