| Engineering bridge safety In a study recently published in the journal Experimental Techniques, UAB researchers describe their innovative approach to determining the load a highway bridge can carry by assessing the bridge’s vibration as a vehicle crosses it. “The goal was to provide highway engineers with a more rapid assessment tool for determining load capacity for highway bridges, ” said study co-author Shen-en Chen, Ph.D. By using this method to calculate bridge load ratings, management of the state’s highway bridges can be improved, including enhancing the safety and minimizing the interruption in service for repairs. A wireless sensor is being developed at UAB that will automate the rating process. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Construction News :: home page |
