| TIR Systems granted UK patent for solid state general illumination TIR Systems Ltd. announces that it has been granted a patent by the UK Patent Office. Patent is the first to be granted to TIR by the UK Patent Office, covering the use of TIR’s proprietary LED-based lighting technology for grid ceilings used in general illumination. This is the fifth patent received out of the company’s most recent total of 49 patents applied for worldwide. Despite their enormous promise, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are currently only a niche lighting product globally, mainly addressing specialty market applications such as Christmas lights, automobile brake lights, traffic signals, architectural illumination and neon-replacement signage. For general purpose “white” lighting for home, office and commercial applications – estimated to be more than US$78 billion – LED technology has been considered unsuitable due to its cost and the number of technological hurdles that had to be overcome. However, the recent introduction of TIR’s LEXEL™ addresses all these LED technology challenges. TIR has developed the first and only fully integrated, seamless solid state lighting (SSL) source that can be used cost effectively for general lighting purposes including retail, office and household applications. A high level of energy efficiency is the underlying reason the technology is expected to dominate the lighting industry in the coming years. Word of TIR’s LEXEL™ achievement is causing excitement throughout the global market and TIR has received an overwhelming response from the lighting industry since LEXEL™ was introduced at Lightfair International in April 2005. The company continues to meet with prospective industry partners to commercialize LEXEL™ in 12-18 months. write your comments about the article :: © 2005 Construction News :: home page |
