New Redgate extension for Microsoft Visual Studio Team Services to improve database testing in DevOps pipelines Cambridge UK, May 10, 2017 – At Microsoft Build 2017, Redgate enhances its database DevOps solution by launching a new Visual Studio Team Services extension for its database provisioning tool, SQL Clone, to further integrate the database into DevOps pipelines. SQL Clone allows users to create SQL Server database copies in seconds and save up to 99% disk space. With SQL Clone, developers can work on their own isolated copy of the database and teams can include realistic test data in their DevOps pipelines from inside Visual Studio Team Services. This is incredibly important to ‘shift left’ and catch problems earlier in the development process before reaching Production. In March 2017, Redgate Software extended DevOps processes to Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Azure SQL databases in Microsoft Visual Studio, by including Redgate Data Tools free in the installer of Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 2017. While Visual Studio and Visual Studio Team Services have become a standard part of the application development stack, the integration of Redgate Data Tools and now the SQL Clone extension are a deliberate move by Redgate to resolve the common bottleneck in the development and deployment process: the database. As Steve Jones, Microsoft Data Platform MVP and Redgate Evangelist, explains: “Development teams are under pressure to deliver frequent, reliable updates, and the way more and more teams are doing that is by adopting a DevOps approach. It encourages collaboration and introduces practices like continuous integration and continuous delivery… but it leaves the database behind. Redgate Data Tools and now SQL Clone provide a reliable, repeatable way of building, deploying and maintaining SQL Server databases using the stack they’re already accustomed to working with.” Redgate Data Tools enable users to develop, source control, and more safely automate the deployment of SQL Server database changes alongside their application changes in Visual Studio. SQL Clone means individuals and teams can work on their own up-to-date database copies to develop, fix and test code much more accurately. To demonstrate how developers using Visual Studio and Visual Studio Team Services can now extend DevOps processes to SQL Server and Azure SQL databases, and have a single source of truth for both the application and the database, Microsoft’s Ed Blankenship and Sam Guckenheimer will present ‘DevOps for every team’ on Wednesday morning at Build. “I’m really looking forward to Build, ” adds Steve Jones. “The database is often seen as the elephant in the room when you talk about DevOps. The ‘DevOps for every team’ session will show how easy it is to now do DevOps for both the application and the database.” Shawn Nandi, Senior Director for Cloud App Development and Data product marketing at Microsoft Corp. agrees. “The addition of Redgate Data Tools in Visual Studio Enterprise with the launch of Visual Studio 2017 demonstrated how users can introduce DevOps practices to the databases that support their applications.
