SMC Introduces Industry's First High Density 10GBASE-T Switch

SMC Networks is shipping the industry's first multi-port combination 10GBASE-T and 10G fiber XFP network switch. Available in January, the new SMC8724-10BT TigerSwitch 10G Standalone 24-port switch leverages best-in-industry 10G technology, including Solarflare 's 10Xpress PHY and switching silicon from Fulcrum Microsystems.

10GBASE-T enables implementation of flexible data centers and short distance networks (up to 100m) where the ease of installation of Cat6A is of added value. This new SMC8724-10BT standalone switch with 20 10GBASE-T ports and four XFP-based 10G fiber ports packs bandwidth and port density — with versatility — into a small 1U-high form factor. And, its conformance with IEEE802.3an assures customers that the new TigerSwitch 10G Standalone 24-port switch is fully standards-compliant and interoperable. Incorporating multilayer L2/L4 switch management features, the SMC8724-10BT is easy to install and operate in any standards-based Ethernet network.

Copper-based Ethernet networks are easy to install, maintain and upgrade. 10GBASE-T enables customers to capitalize on the advantages of copper-based Ethernet while realizing the immense performance benefits of 10G networking. This new product is the first of a series of products from SMC Networks that will drive the adoption of 10G into the data center and across the Enterprise.
