Network General Introduces networkDNA

Network General has revealed plans to release its network intelligence architecture, networkDNA. This new technology platform will enable customers to access, manage, and share network intelligence for real-time IT performance management. The company also announces it will release the networkDNA performance management database (PMDB), a standards-based repository that will expose a rich set of data collected from the customer's network, application and server infrastructure.

networkDNA delivers the source of network truth enabling information sharing and centralized management across Network General software solutions. As the core enabling technology for network intelligence applications, the networkDNA open-architecture captures, classifies, indexes and aggregates real-time IT metrics, accelerating decision support for proactive IT performance management. By delivering this common set of network intelligence components, networkDNA reduces the complexity of IT management and empowers organizations to make more informed decisions about IT performance priorities - ensuring consistent delivery of business services.

The Network General PMDB will provide a foundation for real-time performance analysis and problem resolution, service level reporting, and service assurance. The PMDB will store a rich set of IT performance management data designed to be accessible by Configuration Management Databases (CMDBs), other data repositories and enterprise solutions. Consolidating this real-time performance information is a significant challenge as sources of performance data are siloed within IT with no clear connection between the data - making it difficult to quickly isolate problems. The Network General PMDB will address this challenge by presenting an easily accessible layer of IT performance information derived from multiple sources of data throughout the enterprise - the customer's networkDNA. As a result, IT can be more proactive in managing the impact to and delivery of business services.

Unique attributes of the networkDNA PMDB include:
- Network, flow, and agent-based data collection from a wide range of data sources will enable customers to combine performance information from multiple sources and instrumentation points.
- Network General integration methodologies that easily extend the underlying data source and feeds, including a dedicated set of published APIs that facilitate interoperating with other information sources.
- A repository of performance data abstracted into a manageable layer for easy data access, analysis and presentation.
- Open, clearly defined set of APIs for third party solutions providers (ISVs/Partner community).
- Advanced search capability to facilitate analysis of any application, server or service across the enterprise.
- A platform for custom development of unique performance analysis solutions.
