'Helping find the way to better Public Sector IT' by Quocirca

Quocirca has developed a White Paper, entitled 'Helping find the way to better Public Sector IT', which proposes that there are three pillars for success in government technology implementations – business needs, technology choice, and project management. The paper, sponsored by InterSystems, looks at the public sector delivery challenge, and how the vendors and System Integrators can work together with the government to ensure more projects are delivered effectively.

Looking at why public sector IT projects can be difficult to manage and implement, Quocirca has identified a growing trend towards centralisation, with a need for hierarchical reporting and real time access to data across agencies and departments. These are real issues that affect the success of government IT implementations. Further to this, project size and integrating new technologies with existing legacy systems pose additional key challenges that need to be effectively overcome.

In addition to discussing how modern technologies like SOA can enable successful public sector IT projects, the paper also discusses how strong project management functions can improve delivery. By looking at the relationships between government and IT providers, as well as the way that strategies and policies can be put in place, the paper gives recommendations on how projects could be more effectively managed.
