Home-automation system

STMicroelectronics, a world leader in mixed-signal IC technologies, today announced that itsST7538P Power Line Transceiver will be used in a sophisticated home-automationsystem for the prestigious 70-story 'The Sail @ Marina Bay' apartmentbuilding. The Building, which is under construction on the Singaporewaterfront, is due for completion in 2008 as the tenth tallest building in theworld.
The home-automation system, supplied by The Legrand Group, a leadingproducer of systems for electrical installations and information network, allows different advanced dynamic room scenarios, with lighting, airconditioning, rolling shutters, and many other room-automation featuresmanaged remotely through a personal computer or a WAP-enabled mobiletelephone.
At the heart of the Legrand kit is ST's ST7538, the world's firstsingle-chip FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) power line transceiver, whichintegrates the modem section, the analog front end, the power amplifier and avariety of frequency synthesis, core logic, voltage regulation, andinput/output functions.
Embedded output current and voltage control loops ensure safe and reliabletransmission over existing domestic power lines, where unpredictable impedancechanges may occur. The power amplifier integration and a range of selectableadditional functions -- including Zero-Crossing detection, Carrier andPreamble detection, Band-in-Use detection, Watchdog Timer and Time Out --allows compact and cost-effective home and building automation systems, designed in accordance with specifications defined by the European Committeefor Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).
The ST7538 supports many proprietary or open communication protocols basedon FSK modulation schemes, among which are EHS and KONNEX (EN50090). ST'spower line transceiver has already proven its reliability in the field, withseveral million devices now deployed for a broad range of applicationsincluding Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) for energy utilities remote services.
The ST7538P, produced using a 0.6-micron mixed-signal power technology, ischaracterized for the -40 to +85 degree C temperature range and is availablein a TQFP44 lead-free package. Pricing for the ST7538P is in the range of$5.60 in 1000 piece quantities.
