Jazz Trombonist Noah Bless & His Band Perform Spirited Renditions Of Afro-Cuban Jazz & Post-Bop Explorations On New York Strong Latin Jazz!

Joined by keyboardist Mike Eckroth, bassist Boris Koslov, drummer Pablo Bencid, and percussionist Luisito Quintero, with two guest appearances by flutist Alejandro Aviles, Noah Bless displays versatility and constant creativity during this stirring set.

A valuable part of the New York jazz and Latin music community for the past 25 years, Noah Bless has played trombone with many significant and creative artists. Long overdue to lead his own session, on New York Strong-Latin Jazz! he soars over both Latin rhythms and straight-ahead swinging, excelling on warm ballads and energetic romps alike. On eight challenging yet accessible selections, Bless is joined by pianist and keyboardist Mike Eckroth, bassist Boris Koslov, drummer Pablo Bencid, percussionist Luisito Quintero, and (on two selections) flutist Alejandro Aviles.

The set begins with Bless’ trombone in the lead during “Chasing Normal, ” an inventive piece that inspires a particularly adventurous piano solo. “Ganga” is a first-class example of Latin jazz with Bless matching wits with the strong percussion work of Quintero. He leads an exuberant version of Jobim’s “Canto De Ossanha” and then is quite boppish on “49th Street, ” a piece that also features an excellent piano solo.

The focus is on Noah Bless’ warm tone on trombone during the ballad “Ligia, ” much of which is a trombone-piano duet. The leader’s fluency and versatility is obvious on “The Key, ” a piece that alternates between straight ahead swinging and Latin outbursts from percussionist Quintero. Bless gives “Fire And Rain” a melodic and tasteful treatment before the enjoyable set closes with the energetic and memorable “Sunny Ray.”

Noah Bless earned a Bachelor’s degree in classical and jazz performance from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and a Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Since moving to New York in 1990, he has appeared on over 50 albums including with such notables as Paquito D’Rivera, Mario Bauza, Don Braden and Celia Cruz. Bless has worked with many top groups including the Lincoln Center Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, the Kamikaze Ground Crew, Willie Colon and Eddie Palmieri. Having uplifted the music of many major artists, on New York Strong-Latin Jazz! Noah Bless is at last heard as a leader of his own ensemble, staking out his claim as one of the top trombonists in Latin jazz.
