Israeli guitarist and composer Tal Yahalom, Lights Out

Tal Yahalom is an Israeli guitarist and composer based in Brooklyn, New York since 2014. In his music he seeks to weave a wide spectrum of aesthetic elements into a distinct musical language, exploring the worlds of hard-bop, alternative-rock, impressionistic classical music, free improvisation and contemporary songwriters of various fields.

He is committed to creating engaging storytelling, attentive interplay and distinct sonic environments, while expanding on the traditional functions and textural capabilities of the guitar.

As a leader, Yahalom performs regularly with various solo programs, different trio configurations (which featured Dan Weiss, Caroline Davis and Tom Rainey, among others) and a newly formed chamber-jazz quintet. Tal was a semifinalist at the 2019 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Guitar Competition, earned 1st place at the 2015 Detroit Jazz Festival National Guitar Competition, 3rd place at the 2016 Montreux Jazz Festival International Guitar Competition, and received an AICF scholarship award of excellence in 2014-2015.

Since 2014, he’s been co-leading the trio ‘KADAWA’, performing in major festivals and venues across Europe, New York City and Israel, while receiving praise from publications such as The New York Times, All About Jazz (IT), NEXTBOP and The Vancouver Sun (CA). Yahalom is also an active part in many collaborations and stylistically-diverse side projects, led by musicians such as Nick Dunston, Gaya Feldheim Schorr, Lisa Hoppe, Sagi Kaufman, Adam O’Farrill and Gabriel Zucker.

In Lights Out, his 2nd solo release, Yahalom presents 4 original compositions, performed on classical and acoustic guitars. A collection of music that organically came together, it was composed, recorded, and brought to life entirely during the pandemic, between July and September.

The pieces on the record explore a wide dynamic range, playing with space, pace and resonance, alongside various forms of counterpoint. Aiming to reflect on this difficult time while it is still happening across the globe, Lights Out seeks to embody the waves of uncertainty, displacement and pain it brings, alongside moments of optimism and hope.
