The trio has a cohesive sound that contrasts Provey’s luxurious trumpet tone providing sharp attacks, inventive motifs and languid long tones with Gorry’s guitar work that varies from rapid-fire lines to melodic counterpoint to ambient soundscape. Gunsberg’s drums propel everything with an unhurried pulse and layers of compelling rhythms while his abstract soprano saxophone takes things to a whole new level. "Cyclone" opens the collection with a concise workout that crystalizes the capabilities of this collective. It’s truly a force of nature. "Miles to Go" begins with a showcase of trumpet and drums, followed by the trio working into a top form frenzy. Explorations and contradictions abound in "Convolution" which opens with soothing compressed feedback guitar and introduces Gunsberg’s soprano saxophone. Trumpet joins the voyage through atonal landscapes that end with a return to intense drum rhythms into a riveting drum solo and a spirited coda. The collection closes with "Still Time, " featuring Provey on the drums in solid support of further sax and guitar madness. Collective Expression is a mix of studio and live show tracks recorded during a magic afternoon and evening at Firehouse 12 in New Haven, one of the great rooms for live shows and pristine recordings in the world. All of the rich tonal detail of this exciting new trio’s music is captured. Collective Expression CD Release Live Streams Thursdays: July 9th, 7pm, August 6th 7pm BIO Vance Provey is a freelance Musician/ Composer/educator living in Sandy Hook, CT. Mr. Provey has performed with Bill Dixon, Stephen Haynes, Butch Morris, Rhys Chatam, Gunter Hampel, Bora Bergman, Whit Dickey, and Eric Zinman. Currently collaborating with Bob Gorry and Paul David Gunsberg. Mr. Provey also taught at Bennington College from 1981 to 1984 under Professor Bill Dixon. Bob Gorry is a guitarist/composer/bandleader living in and working out of New Haven, CT. He curates the Multiplex music series with Joe Morris and leads the New Haven Improvisers Collective. He has led groups into a conduction with Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, a long-form composition for improvisers at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and many other venues and festivals. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Signal to Noise, Cadence Magazine, and other publications. He has released 14 CDs and performed with Butch Morris, Stephen Haynes, Allen Lowe, Daniel Levin, Carl Testa, David Chevan, Shawn Persinger, Albert Rivera, Anne Rhodes, Brett Bottomley, Adam Matlock, Jeff Cedrone and many more. Paul Gunsberg grew up outside Detroit, MI. He got his first drum kit at age 5 and by middle school was playing all the time. After graduating high school, he attended New England Conservatory in Boston where he received a Bachelor’s of Music in Jazz Studies. While at NEC he took up the saxophone and live electronics. He currently lives in New Haven, CT with his wife and daughter and is active in the jazz and improvised music scene. |
