HISTORICAL NEW RELEASE: Lennie Tristano Duo Recordings Unearthed (out via Dot Time 3/19)

It is with great excitement that Dot Time Records announces the newest addition to their Legends Series, jazz luminary Lennie Tristano. Dot Time is pleased to release a compendium of never-before-heard recordings that span the decades of Tristano’s illustrious career. The first of this series, Lennie Tristano: The Duo Sessions, a collection of duo recordings from the 60’s-70’s, is due out on March 19th 2020, the anniversary of his birth.

One of the most original voices in jazz, Tristano paved the way for modern generations with his groundbreaking innovations and dedication to teaching. Recordings of Lennie Tristano have served as essential listening for jazz fans and musicians alike since his recording debut as a leader in 1946. Through his playing and his teaching, Lennie Tristano shaped the future of music to come. His singular voice on his instrument and his expansions in the worlds of harmony and rhythm forever changed the musical vocabulary of the Jazz musician.

Director of the ‘Legends’ series Jerry Roche stated: "I am thrilled to work with Carol Tristano and Lenny Popkin to shine a light on a forgotten genius of Jazz music. What you will hear in this release and the ones to follow is breathtaking. Lennie Tristano: Duos is joy, risk-taking and exhilaration!”

Lennie Tristano’s daughter Carol Tristano exclaims “I am very happy to be working with Dot Time Records for the inclusion of Lennie Tristano in their “Legends Series”. Lennie’s musical legacy is one of beauty and innovation. I am excited that a treasure trove of previously unreleased music from my father will now be made available.”

The album features Lennie Tristano in three unique duo contexts. It begins with a 1970 recording with tenor saxophonist Lenny Popkin. Following that is a two piano improvisation with Connie Crothers from 1976. It is the only piano duet ever recorded by Tristano. The album concludes with a set with drummer Roger Mancuso recorded in 1967/68. These previously unreleased recordings document the artist’s stellar creative output in ways that have not been heard before.

In September 2019, Barber completed his first solo drum tour in Latin America (Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina). Barber endorses Ludwig Drums, Istanbul Agop Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Promark Drumsticks, and Sunhouse Percussion.
