While her first two albums made strong impressions for her take on Brazilian music, she has also led an electronic music project, and in recent times has been involved in setting the poems of world-famous artists to music. Taladim has poems by Nathaniel Barratt, T.S. Eliot, William Blake, Jane Tyson Clement, Fernando Pessoa, Federico Garcia Lorca, Paul Verlaine and others that Rozina Pátkai has adapted to a creative jazz setting. The singer, who has a soft and very appealing tone, is joined by János Ávéd on tenor, soprano and occasionally piano, acoustic guitarist István Tóth Jr., cellist Ditta Rohmann, András Dés on percussion (both acoustic and electronic), and Márton Fenyvesi on synth bass. Together they create unique yet melodic ensembles that are full of atmosphere. Among the highlights are the joyful rhythmic piece “Taladim, ” the romantic melody of “Lorelei, ” “Sea Song” which has prominent playing from cellist Rohmann and a soprano solo from Ávéd that hints at Wayne Shorter, the pretty ballad “Szerelem” which features Tóth’s guitar, and the heartbreaking theme of “Llagas de Amor.” Filled with fine solos that perfectly fit the moods of the pieces, Taladim features quietly expressive vocalizing that is quite effective. Born and raised in Hungary, Rozina Pátkai has been leading jazz groups since 2011 and has also been working as a freelance composer. Her first two bossa nova-oriented albums, Voce e Eu and Paraiso na Terra, were award winners at the Independent Music Awards. Ms. Pátkai, who started her electronic music project Minka in 2016, is a student of Intermedia Art at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. Although she is still in the early stages of her musical career, she is well on her way to developing her own voice and style. Taladim is an important early milestone in addition to being a rewarding musical experience. |
