Jazz singer Rebecca DuMaine releases Chez Nous, a program with 14 superior standards that are given swinging and infectious treatments.

Rebecca DuMaine has a beautiful tone, impeccable articulation, swinging phrasing that finds her placing every note in the perfect spot, and an inviting musical personality. On her newest Summit release, Chez Nous, the jazz singer is joined by pianist Dave Miller (her father), bassist Chuck Bennett, drummer Bill Belasco and, on eight of the 14 selections, guitarist Brad Buethe. With Miller contributing colorful solos sometimes reminiscent of George Shearing, Buethe adding fire, versatility and creative ideas on guitar, and Bennett and Belasco offering a solid foundation, Rebecca DuMaine has the perfect group for her warm vocalizing.

The wide-ranging program is filled with highlights. The playful “When In Rome” (inspired by Blossom Dearie) begins the set on a joyful note. Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “So Danco Samba, ” which has Ms. DuMaine singing in Portuguese, is followed by a surprising medium-tempo version of “I’ve Never Been In Love Before” (normally performed as a ballad), a cooking rendition of the ironic “Everything I’ve Got Belongs To You, ” Rebecca singing “ChezMoi” is French, and “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” which includes the rarely-heard verse. A Latinized version of “Tangerine, ” an emotional rendition of “Yesterday” (featuring a father-daughter duet) and the happy 1930s swing tune “You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me” precede a soulful revival of Grover Washington’s “Just The Two Of Us, ” the optimistic “Give Me The Simple Life, ” a transformation of the waltz “Alice In Wonderland” into a swinger in 4/4 time, and the obscure Rodgers & Hart song “Do It The Hard Way.” The memorable program concludes with Rebecca singing in both French and English on “Que Reste-t-il/I Wish You Love.”

Rebecca DuMaine was raised in the San Francisco Bay area where her father Dave Miller has led his trio since the 1970s. Although she always loved to sing, her first career was as an actress on stage in New York City and regionally, as well as in commercials and voice-overs. Over time she found that she preferred singing jazz over musical theater. Since moving back to Northern California in 2010, Rebecca has worked regularly with her father’s trio, recording four CDs (Deed I Do, Better Than Anything, The Consequence Of You and Happy Madness) prior to Chez Nous.

Rebecca DuMaine, who consistently digs into the meanings behind the lyrics, has the ability to make even the most familiar song her own. Chez Nous is a major step forward in her career.
