Marissa Mulder: The John Lennon and Paul McCartney Songbooks
Feinstein’s / 54 Below
254 West 54th St
Thursdays, May 30 & June 13

Marissa Mulder, usually classified as a cabaret singer (a flexible term if ever there was one; she continues to win kinds of Mabel Mercer Foundation and other genre awards) is an entertainer with a unique gift for getting immediately to the heart of things, both to the deep inner core of a song and to the heart of everyone listening. More than any other currently active singer, she may be the greatest heiress to the living legacy of the legendary Doris Day, sharing the now late icon’s effortless knack for pure communication, and with it, an apparent inability to express anything other than the absolute purest emotional truth. In the songs of Lennon and McCartney, Miss Mulder and her musical director, virtuoso pianist Jon Weber, have found a challenge worthy of them; for all the greatness of the music, relatively few interpreters have been able to do anything with these songs that works as well as the composers’ own canonical recordings. If this new show is anywhere near as moving as her most recent offering, Two Tickets Left (thankfully also available as an album, Praise The Lord), it's one you don't want to miss.
