Jazz Highlights at Flushing Town Hall in March Mwenso & The Shakes SAT, MAR 2, 7 PM (DANCE & GROOVE WORKSHOP), 8 PM (CONCERT) $16/$10 Members & Students/FREE for Teens Mwenso & the Shakes are a unique troupe of global artists who present music that merges the highest form of entertainment and artistry while commanding a formidable timeline of jazz and blues expression through African and Afro-American music. Taking from the stylings of Fats Waller, Muddy Waters, James Brown and many other American musical legends, Michael Mwenso leads an electrifying show the New York Times calls, “intense, prowling, and ebullient.” Global Mashup 1: Bollywood Meets Global Roots Blues SAT, MAR 9, 7 PM (DANCE LESSONS), 8 PM (CONCERT) $16/$10 Members & Students/FREE for Teens We’re mashing up 2 cultures on 1 stage with an open dance floor! Starting with dance lessons, then each band plays a set, then the two meet and jam. The series opens with the return of 2 powerhouse bands, Falu, internationally recognized Indian vocalist, whose quartet combines traditional roots with inventive rock, mashing with Hazmat Modine, distillers of multi-American-genres, melded with African, Central Asian, Caribbean and Eastern European influences. Bring your dancing shoes! Unforgettable: The Magic of Nat King Cole FRI, MAR 15, 8 PM $25/$20 Members & Students/FREE for Teens A modern centennial celebration of the power and genius of Nat King Cole, brought to life by singer and composer Sachal Vasandani and an exciting group of New York’s top musicians. Sachal Vasandani is one of the great crooners of our time and his “beautiful, velvety voice” and “remarkable stage presence” (NPR) have drawn multiple comparisons to Nat King Cole himself. The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble: Taguiera (Homeland) SAT, MAR 16, 7 PM (DANCE LESSON), 8 PM (CONCERT) $16/$10 Members & Students/FREE for Teens The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble brings awareness of the endangered language of the Garifuna people that was proclaimed a “Masterpiece and Oral Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. The Garinagu (plural) are a mixed culture of West Africans that intermarried with The Carib-Arawak Indians on the island of St. Vincent & The Grenadines. The Garifuna Jazz Ensemble presents this rich culture by fusing language, indigenous rhythms and traditional songs with elements and traditions of jazz. LADY GOT CHOPS: Women’s History Month Festival THU, MAR 21, 7:30 PM $16/$10 Members & Students/FREE for Teens Artist and producer Kim Clarke is the founder of LADY GOT CHOPS, a women’s history month music and arts Festival. She has organized concerts, advertised for fellow musicians, and enhanced careers of women in jazz and music for 17 years. This concert will be a culmination of a long dream to present a Global healing through multi-cutural cooperation and artistic sharing. Music In Color: Gabriela Lena Frank SAT, MAR 23, 2 PM FREE (with online RSVP) Presented in partnership with Orchestra of St. Luke's, Music in Color turns its focus to the music and life of Gabriela Lena Frank, an American composer of Peruvian, Chinese, and Lithuanian Jewish descent. Frank is featured with a narration written and performed by Kirya Traber. The program includes selections from Frank’s own string quartets, as well as a piece by one of her inspirations, Chou Wen-chung, and five new works. Global Mashup 2: Western Swing Meets Balkan Brass SAT, MAR 23, 7 PM (DANCE LESSONS), 8 PM (CONCERT) $16/$10 Members & Students/FREE for Teens We’re mashing up 2 cultures on 1 stage with an open dance floor! Starting with dance lessons, then each band plays a set, then the two meet and jam. The Brain Cloud, whose sextet brings Western swing’s ragtime, bluegrass, Delta blues and cowboy ditties, mashing with Romashka’s Russian, Balkan, Romanian, and "Gypsy" vibes. You’ll be dancing all night! Joe Kye: Migrants FRI, MAR 29, 7 PM (WORKSHOP), 8 PM (CONCERT) $16/$10 Members & Students/FREE for Teens Award-winning musician Joe Kye brings his unique blend of violin looping, electronics, singing, and storytelling, with special guest, Chinese-American hip-hop artist Jason Chu. Migrants tells the story of Joe’s life as an immigrant Asian-American, weaving together original music, humorous stories, and cutting-edge technology. Pre-show workshop on expressing cultural identity through sound will have participants question: What does it mean to be Asian-American? How can creativity give people the tools to build their identity? Queens Symphony Orchestra Masterworks Concert Series: The Romantic Heart SAT, MAR 30, 7:30 PM FREE (with online RSVP) The Queens Symphony Orchestra presents the first concert in its Masterworks Concert Series entitled “The Romantic Heart.” Repertoire includes Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll, " Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. Queens Jazz OverGround 2019 Spring Jazz Fest SUN, MAR 31, 12-10 PM FREE (with online RSVP) A free, daylong series of jazz workshops and performances. This annual event highlights many renowned and emerging jazz instrumentalists and vocalists in Queens. The day will include performances by student jazz combos, jazz master classes, and middle school and high school bands. The evening will feature an exciting lineup of 6 professional Queens-based jazz ensembles. |
