Four days of ‘Jazz in the Canyon’ in Dunsmuir The 7th annual Jazz in the Canyon is scheduled for four days in late September at multiple venues in the downtown Dunsmuir area – Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 27 to 30. The artists will perform jazz and other styles infused with jazz. Jazz in the Canyon, as stated in a press release, “honors the broad influences of jazz that mirrors the vast melting pot in American culture. Listeners will be treated to everything from blues to swing, bebop to gypsy jazz, smooth jazz to Latin jazz, some funk, and eclectic fusions of roots, pop, and folk music infused with jazz.” Sponsored by First 5 Siskiyou and hosted by the Dunsmuir Resource Center, the event will highlight music for children with Wild Roots; and the Dunsmuir Library will have books on display to share the history of jazz and jazz artists. Featured performers include Blues Hall of Famer and finger-style blues guitarist Terry Robb, The Ed Dunsavage Trio of Ashland, Nightsong featuring chanteuse Kim Niles and keyboardist Dave Reynolds, The Lone Arranger with Kevin McDowell, and Latin finger-style guitarist Rick Garrett. Spanish-inspired guitarist Charles Guy and violinist Linda Powers plan to perform an eclectic set, and jazz singer Scott Silber of Dunsmuir will make a rare appearance. Newer to the area, singer-songwriter Aaron Kimball will bring his pop soul style with his jazzy chords and vocal style. Typically known as a western swing group, Jefferson Justice will also perform. When asked how his musical style relates to jazz, Justice’s leader Nick Dennis said, “Western swing is swing, and swing is jazz!” Two north state acts will combine their talents on the final day of Jazz in the Canyon: Allison and Victor with the Midnight Band and the Charles Valona Trio will first perform separately, then get together for a “grand finale.” The Midnight Band will include Mitch Ross on drums and Stefan Schittko on keyboards; the Charles Valona trio will feature Kenji Kato on drums and Bruce Calin on bass. Participating venues include Pops Performing Arts and Cultural Center, the Dunsmuir Brewery Works, Siskiyou Arts Museum, La Perla de Nayarit Mexican Restaurant, Pizza Factory, Cornerstone Cafe, Alpine Realty, Dunsmuir Community Garden, and Dunsmuir Hardware. Many local businesses are offering some jazz-inspired fun and discounts: All-Aboard Espresso will offer coffee drinks named after jazz greats; and Ol’Thyme Tattoos will offer musical note tattoos. The Cornerstone Cafe will be serving the Benedict Goodman breakfast, a “morning hangover cure” as reported by The New Yorker in 1942. If you make an appointment at Rapunzel’s Hair Salon during Jazz in the Canyon, you will get discounts on hair cuts, pedicures and manicures. Discounts will be offered for those who mention Jazz in the Canyon at Ted Fay Fly Shop, Shattered Records, and Silvermoon Galleria/Heart and Soul Emporium. Lennan’s Junktion, which will close its doors on Sept. 30, will also offer some discounts. A Wine and Paint Night with Yolanda Kruger of eXp Realty California offers wine while painting on easels. “The theme of the paint event is jazz, but you may paint anything your heart desires, ” according to Yolanda. Wine, canvasses, acrylic paint and supplies provided for $20. The Ol’ Dunsmuir Faire is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pops Performing Arts and Cultural Center with more live music. One of the Jazz in the Canyon coordinators, Suzanne says, “We are looking forward to celebrating the end of the fires in the cool fall air.” Her sister, Allison Scull, also an event coordinator, adds, “Here is the current schedule, but we encourage people to go to the website for updates. As the event gets closer more people get in the spirit. There is also a lot of information about the artists. While some events are free to the public, some are asking for a donation. All events at Pops have advanced tickets on sale.
