NextBop Launches New Website; Premieres Daniel Rotems New Track!

Nextbop, an internet publication which has been providing international coverage of the contemporary jazz scene since 2009 unveiled its new website redesign on August 27th. The redesign, some two years in the making, hopes to freshen up the site’s image on top of providing much-needed technical improvements. “Our old website was beginning to look outdated and navigating its content was far from optimal. When we launched, in 2009, cell phones and tablets weren’t really a concern when building websites. Technology has since then made leaps and bounds and we needed to adapt or be left behind, ” says Nextbop co-founder Sébastien Hélary.

The new design which stays true to the general look and feel of the original site is now fully responsive and can be just as easily viewed on mobile devices as on computers. The search function, which was a also major weakness of the original design, has been completely overhauled and now content is extremely easy to find using keyword searches.

One of the major challenges of the endeavor was that all the old content had to be manually migrated to the new site due to the incompatibility of both platforms. “We had to manually copy and paste the content of about 1, 000 blog posts, re-embed all the videos and streams, find new high resolution images and crop them individually and then we had to categorize and tag each post. It literally took several months, ” says Hélary. But not all of the original content made the cut. “Because of the immensity of the task, we decided to only migrate the last three years of posts as well as the most-read posts from prior years. However, we will be monitoring which missing pages users are trying to access and we will keep adding back old content as necessary, ” adds Hélary.
All of the posts on the site are now categorized between interviews, reviews, streams and videos, so that users can browse exactly for the content they are looking for. In addition, every single musician, album and record label has been tagged and a tag cloud displayed on every page provides an alternative way for users to find what they’re after.

“There are a few other improvements we think will greatly enhance our readers’ experience. The sidebar now features our Top Content, our five most-read posts of the last thirty days, so that users can see what others are reading. Each post now features its Related Content at the bottom, so that readers can find content similar to what they just read. Also, all of our year-end best-of lists are now easily accessible through the main menu and our Editor-in-Chief Anthony Dean-Harris’ weekly KRTU San Antonio radio show, The Line-Up, can be played from the sidebar on every page, ” says Hélary.

“Overall, we hope that readers will really enjoy the new design and that they’ll have an easier time going from one post to the other while discovering new music and new artists. Our mission has always been to promote jazz, the music we love so deeply, and we think the website redesign will help us broaden our audience and create new fans for the artform, ” concludes Hélary.
