New BBC Radio 3 Saturday programme
The BBC Radio 3 Saturday afternoon 5pm slot after Jazz Record Requests will have a new programme from 7 April. The BBC's press release describes it as "a refreshed version of Jazz Line-Up".
"J to Z is a new weekly programme celebrating the best in jazz; past, present and future. Award-winning broadcaster and vocalist Jumoké Fashola joins the presenting line-up alongside former Jazz Line-Up hosts Julian Joseph and Kevin Le Gendre." It will be produced by Somethin’ Else.
Jumoké Fashola said: "It is a total dream come true to be presenting J to Z on BBC Radio 3. Anyone who knows me knows I am passionate about jazz. I am looking forward to introducing our audiences to the finest jazz; incredible live sessions from some of the most uber musicians on the scene and getting a chance to delve into classic jazz archives. Jazz is an ever evolving, thrilling art form and I can't wait to share my passion with the listeners, whether they are just curious about jazz or already aficionados."
The press release continues: "Each week, the programme will feature the best tracks, as well as special live sessions and exclusive recordings from some of the best concerts from around Europe and the UK. Every few weeks J to Z will go on the road, presenting its own specially-curated shows around the country. The new J to Z podcast will see jazz musicians reveal the musical moments that have made them, as well as breaking down influential recordings to zoom in on the drum break, the chord sequence or the trumpet solo that changed the way these musicians approach their own music."
BBC Radio 3 Controller Alan Davey says: "With a presentation team of broadcaster and singer Jumoké Fashola, musician and composer Julian Joseph and Kevin Le Gendre, you can expect some real jazz treats and discoveries. Whether you know jazz inside out already, or just want to find out more, J to Z will be the place to be."
Jazz Line-Up has been produced in Glasgow since April 2000. BBC producer Lindsay Pell created the programme, and produced the first two episodes. It was then produced by Keith Loxam for the next 13 years, and for the past five by Sushil K.Dade. The presenter of the very first show was Claire Martin, and subsequent presenters have included Stacey Kent, Helen Mayhew, Julian Joseph and Kevin Le Gendre.
The last episode of Jazz Line-Up will be on 31 March and feature a performance by Donny McCaslin, a repeat broadcast of a show that first went out in November 2017. It also features Jumoké Fashola in the role of vocalist (DETAILS HERE)
The first edition of J to Z on 7 April will present Shabaka Hutchings' band Sons of Kemet in session.
