New Mikroton Recordings releases — March 2017 Cilantro: Angélica Castelló & Billy Roisz Borderland CD | Digital A debut release by Cilantro, an Austrian duo of Angélica Castelló and Billy Roisz, two active persons in experimental music in Österreich. They already appeared on our label in 2014 on Scuba with Burkhard Stangl and dieb13, SQID with Mario de Vega, Attila Faravelli, and Burkhard Stangl, Feedback: Order From Noise compilation in 2014 and on Klingt.org: 10 Jahre Bessere Farben compilation in 2009. Cilantro presents a world full of enigmas, labyrinths, sometimes abrasive, sometimes ecstatic, a complex and delicate subjectivity. Recorded in a basement in Podersdorf am See, a resort Austrian area, it conjures dark resonances of the space waking up memories hidden inside. "Borderland" deals with blurry edges of contradictory matters coming together and they put under scrutiny the activity in bordering areas between noise and silence, tenderness and rudeness, beat and drone, inner consciousness and outer awareness, control and freedom, forming the pieces by pulling the lever between structure and chaos, beauty and ugliness, demonstrating a thrilling display of human and technological interplay. Martin Taxt is a Norwegian musican who plays tuba and runs Sofa label, Andrey Popovskiy hails from Saint Petersburg and plays violin with objects, Kurt Liedwart plays ppooll using mostly sinewaves and quiet noises and one can notice his current transition to a more noise oriented sound. "Hjem" is a joint adventure of constructing the soundscapes of mysterious clouds of harmonic and microtonal sounds. Acoustic instrumentation lost its human quality making machine-like sounds and computer imitated organ-like sounds and emitted cracked sounds of everyday life. The alchemic processes and procedures of working with the constituent parts reinforced by a beautifully conjured Toshimaru Nakamura's mix highlight the unique approach of each player to sound and their ability to build an organically sounding organism with unexpected turns. BUY — http://www.mikroton.net/recordings/index.php/catalog/mikroton-cd-54/ mikroton cd 55 The Holy Quintet Borough CD | Digital Johnny Chang viola Jamie Drouin suitcase modular and radio Dominic Lash double bass Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga zither David Ryan bass clarinet The Holy Quintet is a new group in Mikroton family with only one artist, namely Johnny Chang, appearing before on Echtzeitmusik Berlin compilation in 2012. Borough documents the singular meeting of Johnny Chang, Jamie Drouin, Dominic Lash, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, and David Ryan. The group was assembled by Simon Reynell for a one-off recording session at the Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel on February 15, 2013, taking advantage of Chang and Drouin simultaneously being in London for an installation and concert. The Holy Quintet, as the artists would jokingly refer to themselves months later, is a cross section of each artist’s individual projects at that time, and shows where those varying languages overlap, as much as diverge. The result is an exciting and distinct album within each artist’s oeuvre. The recording at Radio Student involved the transubstantiation of base liquids into nectar and thence by an alchemical process into music. Fracture Mechanics, the scientific study of cracks in any form of material, is a well-chosen metaphor for the examination of music, sounds, shapes and their breaking points. The fact that this has given the word "fracture" a slight semantic degrading is of particular importance. Even more unorthodox expressions - such as "brötzmann-esque arousal" or "the buzzing valves ŕ la Dörner"- will inevitably wear thin over time, so too the mechanics of sound - that is, the basic ideas about music and its performance must be subject to critical review and alteration. This quartet is particularly suited for such a task: Lucio Capece, Argentinian-Berliner perception worker (featuring on Echtzeitmusik Berlin and duo album with Chris Abrahams), Burkhard Beins, legendary echtzeitdrummer and Post-Punk fan (featuring on Echtzeitmusik Berlin, Glück's album, and Future Perfect with Serge Baghdassarians and Boris Baltschun), Martin Küchen, Lund based saxophonist and baguette baker (featuring on The Bakery, a duo with Keith Rowe), and last but not least, Swiss/Irish clarinetist and domestic glassware operator Paul Vogel (a new artist in our roster). Garcia Aq'Ab'Al CD | Digital The second appearance of Alfredo Costa Monteiro after critically acclaimed Contour with Keith Rowe, Kurt Liedwart and Ilia Belorukov, and the first physical release of Miguel A. Garcia after Uropygi with Kurt Liedwart, Ilia Belorukov and Dmitry Krotevich on Mikroton Digital. The album is titled after “Aq’ab’al”, the Mayan Astrology Sign about polar opposites — dawn and dusk, hot and cold, black and white which represents renewal, change, the end of boredom or new beginnings. The album takes off into the territory of spectral modulation of an array of sound waves and intrusions of abrupt shifts in the flow. A forceful energy that seems to be constrained, captured into a muffled atmosphere. Ebbs and flows of the circulation of sound waves, mixed with ferocious textural feedbacks configurate a kind of a primary vibration, combined with high pitch chord sounds seem to draw a kind of strange observance.
