MPS Records - Count Basie, Marian McPartland (March 24th, 2017)

Count Basie And His Orchestra - Basic Basie //1969

Recorded at the famous Universal Studios in Chicago in 1969, this is the first of two classic Basie recordings for MPS. There are at least three aspects that place Basic Basie on the ‘special album’ list: lots of the Orchestra’s standards arranged by the inimitable Chico O’Farrell, more Basie on piano, and some great tenor solos by one Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. The band comes out hot and swinging on Jesse Stone’s Idaho, with a bouncy piano solo, and “Lockjaw” pours out a scalding half chorus starting at the bridge. Blues in My Heart has a laid-back Basie and Davis, and on I Don’t Stand a Chance Davis blows a warm, breathy ballad. Red Roses, Moonglow, and Ma He’s Making Eyes at Me are all beautifully arranged at a medium tempo, with Basie and Davis the soloists.

Line-Up: Norman Keenan (Contrabass), Harold Jones (Drums), Eric Dixon (Flute), Freddie Green (Guitar), Count Basie (Piano), Bobby Plater, Marshal Royal (Saxophone [Alto]), Charlie Fowlkes (Saxophone [Baritone]), Eddie Davis, Eric Dixon (Saxophone [Tenor]), Bill Hughes, Grover Mitchell, M.F. Wanzo (Trombone), Gene Goe, Oscar Brashear, Sonny Cohn, W. Reed (Trumpet)

Marian McPartland - Interplay //1970

Recipient of a Grammy, honored with Downbeat’s ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, and host of National Public Radio’s longest running program, the iconic ‘Piano Jazz’, Marian McPartland was one of the pioneer women in jazz. “Elegant, tasteful, charming, sensuous” (Melody Maker), with a style that one critic called “flexible, complex, and almost impossible to pigeonhole”, she played everything from Dixieland to the avant-garde. McPartland teams up in a rare piano/bass duo, something she had always wanted to do, since “the possibilities of the music being free and uninhibited are much greater”. Her bassist, Linc Milliman, “sounds like a whole rhythm section…I may start a tune…but often he will set the tempo and the mood.” The ‘live’ settings in Rochester NY and Manhattan are perfect stages for the music’s intimacy.

Line-Up: Linc Milliman (Bass), Marian McPartland (Piano)
