The superlative trumpeter first stepped into the spotlight in the mid-1960s, as a sideman to the great saxophonist Jackie McLean; in 1971, he co-founded Strata-East Records, a nexus of hard bop and spiritual jazz, with undersung piano genius Stanley Cowell.
