Flushing Town Hall Will Swing Into Summer With Outstanding Jazz, World Music, Drumming, Dance and Family Performances

Flushing Town Hall will keep the summer doldrums at bay with a breadth of global music, family programs, exhibitions, jazz and workshops this July and August. The global arts venue will present over 25 programs to entertain audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

"We are thrilled to continue our 40th anniversary season celebrations this summer with an exceptional lineup of acclaimed performers from around the globe, " says Flushing Town Hall Executive and Artistic Director Ellen Kodadek. "We also will bring back popular summer programs such as full moon drumming, and for the first time host a Jazz Jam All-Stars event that features accomplished musicians, many from Queens!"

Flushing Town Hall's summer highlights include: I Wan Jan: Puppetry from Taiwan (Jul 14); Minhwa: Korean Folk Paintings in New York (Jul 19); Bulla en el Barrio (Jul 21); Minhwa Hand Fan Making (Jul 21); Svetlana & The Delancey Five (Jul 26); Cardboard Explosion! (Jul 28); Jazz Jam All-Stars (Aug 4); Annual Members' Exhibit (Aug 9); Salon Sunday (Aug 11); Sushi & Steamed Egg Workshop (Aug 18); the Monthly Jazz Jam (Jul 3, Aug 7); and Live Drawing with Models (Jul 8, Aug 12).

The Open Mic Series (Jul 8, Jul 22, Aug 5, Aug 19, Aug 26, Sep 9) and an outdoor Full Moon Drum Circle (Jul 16) will return this summer season.

Flushing Town Hall is accessible by car, bus, train and foot—located a short distance from the 7 train—at 137-35 Northern Blvd. in Flushing, Queens. Access for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility is available.

Once again, Flushing Town Hall is opening its doors to teenagers—for free. Under the "Teen Access Program, " all 13- to 19-year-old teens (whether a member or not) will be welcomed to attend any performance for free. The program is designed to appeal to students and help foster a greater love for arts and culture.

Monthly Jazz Jam: Celebrating the Legacy of Louis Armstrong

Open to Jazz students, musicians, and music educators, Monthly Jazz Jams are a fun way to hone your skills and jam with your peers. The house band led by saxophonist Carol Sudhalter opens each jam with the work of Louis Armstrong. Don't play? Come listen!

Live Drawing with Models
MON, JUL 8, 6 PM
$16/$10 Members & Students
Draw from a live nude model. Bring your sketch pad and favorite drawing medium, for a series of quick and long poses while listening to music in a relaxing non-judgmental environment. For ages 18 & up.

Open Mic Series: Building Bridges through Storytelling, Poetry and Song

$5 Suggested Donation/FREE for Members, Students & Teens
MC'd by the 2018 Thunderbird American Indian Dancers' Indian of the Year, Bobby Gonzalez, this series seeks to bring together people of different cultures and help them to appreciate their common humanity. Every session begins with Bobby performing a Native story, and he will then encourage the audience to recite, sing, or narrate with their unique voices. Open Mic Dates: JUL 8, JUL 22, AUG 5, AUG 19, AUG 26, SEP 9.

I Wan Jan: Puppetry from Taiwan

Fourth-generation master puppeteers from Taiwan return to Flushing Town Hall! Traditional hand puppet performance is based on Peking Opera, I Wan Jan brings Cave of Fire and Cloud, a non-verbal classic episode from the infamous Journey to the West with exciting martial arts scenes. For ages 7 & up.
PUPPETRY WORKSHOP AT 4:30 PM

I Wan Jan puppeteers lead this workshop where participants can learn basic techniques of manipulating Chinese hand puppets for maximum drama. For ages 10 & up.

Full Moon Afro-Brazilian Drum Circle

Learn to play timbal, caixa, surdo, repique, xequere, tamborim, pandeiro, and much more with a former member of Timbalada! Dendê will teach you proper technique, exercises, improvisations and soloing, traditional rhythms from candomble and samba de roda, as well as the original rhythms and breaks from bands like Timbalada, Ilê Aiyê, and Olodum. For ages 12 & up.

Minhwa: Korean Folk Paintings in New York

Part of life for the people of Korea, Minhwa are color paintings popular during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). The word Minhwa literally means 'painting of the people.' Supported by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Keimyung University in South Korea, the Traditional Korean Minhwa Center exhibits over 40 colorful Minhwa artworks in their first exhibition in New York.

Bulla en el Barrio

Celebrate the bullerengue tradition born in the Urabá and Caribbean region of Colombia. From its early days, bullerengue has been a tool for women to express themselves through music and dance; uniting communities, and celebrating life through music, dance, and the stories that these songs tell. Come ready to dance to this exuberant music!

Minhwa Hand Fan Making

Create your very own Minhwa on a hand fan to take home to help beat the summer heat. Learn to paint Korean folk paintings from professional Minhwa artists from Korea. Don't miss this special experience! For ages 5 & up.

Svetlana & The Delancey Five

One of New York's most beloved swing bands is known for their signature vintage-inspired sound, foot-stomping groove, and exciting stage presence! Swing and sway to the strains of Svetlana and the band, they are sure to get you dancing to the beat of their infectious tunes and Svetlana's red-hot vocals. Wear dancing shoes!

Cardboard Explosion!

Create your own moving mouth puppet. After learning to cut and fold a single sheet of paper into a working puppet form, participants will add features to make their puppet unique! For ages 8 & up.

A one-of-a-kind puppetry experience! Cardboard Explosion! tells four original stories using nothing but cardboard and the power of your imagination. With help from the audience, puppeteer Brad Shur transforms simple cardboard shapes into elaborate puppet characters, then brings them to life right before your eyes. For ages 5 & up.

Jazz Jam All-Stars

This concert features the high-caliber musicians who regularly perform at the Louis Armstrong Monthly Jazz Jam backed by our house band led by Carol Sudhalter. Reception at 6 PM, followed by a celebratory group photo reminiscent of "A Great Day of Harlem." All local musicians are welcome to join. Concert will feature some of the music of Louis Armstrong, and close with a group jam.

Make home-style Futomaki sushi and steamed egg with Dr. Hsing-Lih Chou and chefs from Taiwan Overseas Chinese University. Learn to make these hearty and nutritious dishes and listen to Dr. Chou’s story about the dishes that reflect regional characteristics and history of East Asia. For ages 12 & up.
