Paul Winter’s Winter Solstice Celebration December 14, 15 & 16at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine

Paul Winter's Winter Solstice Celebration embraces the spirit of the holidays within the extraordinary acoustics of the world's largest cathedral. This multimedia event will feature the 10-member Paul Winter Consort, gospel singer Theresa Thomason, the 25 dancers and drummers of the Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, and special guests, the 15-member Pletenitsa Balkan Choir.

Paul Winter's Winter Solstice Celebration has become New York's favorite holiday alternative to the Nutcracker and Radio City's Christmas Spectacular. This event offers a contemporary take on ancient solstice rituals, when people gathered together on the longest night of the year to welcome the return of the sun and the birth of the new year.
The Cast of Characters:

Theresa Thomason

The Consort's beloved gospel singer will be performing for the first time
a song new to her
and to the Solstice event,
as well as iconic songs that have become traditional to the event.

The Pletenitsa Balkan Choir, directed by Christiane Karam

This 15-voice ensemble sings in this fabled tradition of the Bulgarian choirs. This will be their New York debut.

The Forces of Nature Dance Theatre

The 35 dancers and drummers
of this extraordinary troupe
draw from both West African and contemporary genres. They will be presenting a new work choreographed by founder/director Abdel Salaam.

Paul McCandless

The Consort's double-reed master will be featured this year playing music from his new album "Morning Sun."

The Paul Winter Consort

Eugene Friesen, cello;
Paul McCandless, English horn and bass clarinet;
Paul Sullivan, keyboards;

A message from Paul Winter: "We are pleased to offer you our free Winter Solstice Collection. This has become a solstice tradition for us. Our intent is both to give a sampling of the artists who will be performing in this year's Solstice Celebration, and to share recordings we love.

Please enjoy these 10 tracks, featuring recordings by Theresa Thomason, the Pletenitsa Balkan Choir, Paul McCandless, and the Consort."
