MPS Records: Monty Alexander - Jasper van't Hof - Trombone Summit (Winding, Mangelsdorff, Watrous, Whigham) (Release: July 28th, 2017)

Three further MPS classics will be digitally available at the end of July: First Monty Alexander - Cobilimbo - A thoroughly enjoyable album that captures the joyous sensuality of the Caribbean. Second Jasper van't Hof - Flowers Allover - Recorded some 40 years ago, with its mix of jazz and modern classical influences, Flowers stands up to anything that today's young lions have to offer. And last but not least Trombone Summit - This album's a listening pleasure for any music lover, but if you have a particular fondness for the trombone's warm-toned vocal sound, this album's a must – a once in a lifetime conclave of four of the instrument's greats.

Monty Alexander - Cobilimbo //1978

On Cobilimbo, Monty once again partners with Ernst Ranglin, one of the fathers of ska and guitarist with the likes of Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. Charles Campbell is on conga, and Vincent Taylor plays his own hand-crafted double-tenor steel drums, creating a surprising sound symbiosis with the piano. Bassist Andy Simpkins worked with Sarah Vaughan and George Shearing, and after his ten-year stint with the Ahmad Jamal trio, Frank Grant counts as a pianist's drummer.

Line-Up: Andy Simpkins (Bass), Charles Campbell (Congas), Frank Gant (Drums), Ernest Ranglin (Guitar), Monty Alexander (Piano), Vincent Taylor (Steel Drums)

Jasper van't Hof - Flowers Allover //1978

By the time of this 1977 solo recording, Dutch pianist Jasper Van't Hof's work with American tenor giant Archie Shepp and Van't Hof's own ground-braking jazz-fusion group Pork Pie (MPS albums Transitory and The Door is Open) had propelled him into the front row of European players. Flowers Allover profiles his prodigious creativity as a solo pianist, a venue in which he would become increasingly involved over the coming years.

Line-Up: Jasper van't Hof (Piano)

Winding, Mangelsdorff, Watrous, Whigham - Trombone Summit //1981

There's Dane Kai Winding, best known for his classic series of jazz albums with modern trombone icon J.J. Johnson. With his multiphonics and exploratory bent, Germany's Albert Mangelsdorff was a major innovator on the instrument. American Bill Watrous played with Maynard Ferguson and Ten Wheel Drive; his Manhattan Wildlife Refuge was a leading big band in the 70's. The USA's Jiggs Whigham worked in the Stan Kenton band before moving to Europe where he has been in continual demand as a soloist and educator. An added delight: American piano maestro Horace Parlan adds taste and depth with a solo on every piece but one.

Line-Up: Albert Mangelsdorff (Trombone), Bill Watrous (Trombone), Jiggs Whigham (Trombone), Kai Winding (Trombone), Mads Vinding (Bass), Allan Ganley (Drums), Horace Parlan (Piano)
