"The Journey" is an audio diary with music and songs chronicling the journey of children's relationship to music, what they want to do as they grow up into adulthood, how music has changed their lives and how they hope their music can be an agent for social change.

The Ukes and Kids songwriting project gives kids in South Africa the opportunity to meet, collaborate, create, play music, write songs and learn from each other and a host of local and international volunteer performing artists, educators, and mentors. With the support of Kickstarter funders, The National Arts Council of South Africa, The Ukulele Hall of Fame, The NYC Ukulele Festival, Kala and Mahalo Ukes, friends and family, the kids and teachers received 50 ukuleles, music books, penny whistles, small percussion instruments, and travel was supported for international performing artists and educators, Katie Down, Justine Williams and Matt Darriau to work with the directors of the Mobile Arts and Entrepreneurship Institute, Lucky Litelu and Tsepo Chohchoe and local musician/educators. The team created a volunteer- run 5-day music and arts camp, free of charge, to foster the talents of young people, giving them an opportunity to record their songs at a professional recording studio. The culminating the CD features interviews, stories, sound bites and songs written on the ukulele.

Local professional musicians and support staff helped with arrangements and instrumental backing and the whole album was recorded in one day. Now we are thrilled to share this moving and inspiring collection of songs and interviews with the world! ALL the proceeds from this CD go to support the on-going free music education programs offered by The Mobile Arts and Entrepreneurship Institute in Johannesburg. We look forward to sharing this celebration with you!
