MPS Pt.2. - Two month of big bands and large ensembles // Frederic Rabold Crew, The Stars Of Faith, Turk Murphy's Frisco Jazz Band (Nov 18th, 2016)

The last two month of the year 2016 will be full of records by big bands and large ensembles. Multiple styles will be represented: From Dixieland and New Orleans sounds to gospel and tango. Check out the second bunch of re-issues:

Frederic Rabold Crew - Funky Tango
German trumpeter/composer Frederic Rabold is at home with the jazz idioms of Dixieland and swing, the modernisms of Gil Evans and the Avantegarde explorations of Gunter Hampel. Influenced by trumpet icons Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, and Booker Little, he has worked with Lester Bowie, Albert Mangelsdorff, and Tony Oxley. Ribold's Crew was popular throughout the 70's, and with the addition of American singer Lauren Newton, this edition of the crew was particularly successful. A founding member of Vocal Summit and the Vienna Art Orchestra, Newton is as comfortable singing Schoenberg and Webern as she is exploring the improvisational edges. This unusual mix of trumpet, voice, sax, clarinets and rhythm section works as a small ensemble with a unique big band sound.

The Stars Of Faith - In Europe - Swing Low Sweet Chariot (Live)
One of America's greatest gospel groups, The Stars of Faith was founded in 1958 by five members of the legendary Clara Ward Singers. Faith performed at the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden. They performed and toured with famed poet Langston Hughes' Broadway play Black Nativity, gave a command performance for the English Royal Family, and appeared in Berlin with the Reverend Martin Luther King in front of a crowd of 20, 000. Recorded live during a three-month European tour in 1969 the album represents an apotheosis of Afro-American gospel.

Turk Murphy's Frisco Jazz Band - (Live)
American trombonist Turk Murphy counts as one of the prime movers in the West Coast resurgence of Dixieland jazz in the late 1930's; Murphy's brand of traditional jazz remained popular until his death in 1987. Hs band played concerts and festivals throughout the world, was featured along with Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Hines and Ella Fitzgerald at the inauguration of New York's Louis Armstrong Stadium, and played Carnegie Hall. Recorded live at the '73 Heidelberg Jazz Festival, the band's free-flowing, relaxed two-beat feel combines the best of the New Orleans and Chicago styles. The use of tuba instead of bass leans towards Dixie, as does the intricate ensemble play, yet there are also brilliant solo passages, reminiscent of Chicago jazz of the 1920's.
