Pt.1: MPS - Woodwinds, Vibes & Violin

September is an MPS month full of extraordinary jazz instruments and summits. MPS is famous for his broad number of world wide known jazz violin players. Check out this new bunch of jazz sounds from the Black Forest:

Bulgarian Jazz Quartet – Jazz Focus '65
It's astonishing this band even existed given the period's chilly Cold War atmosphere and dearth of jazz in their native Bulgaria; even more incredible that they were not only popular in Western Europe – they were good. By 1967 the quartet was playing festivals and concerts throughout the continent. In 1968 they won the international critic's prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The French newspaper The New Observer remarked that the band had "…the furor of Albert Ayler, the storm of Elvin Jones, and the daring of Cecil Taylor." The Geneva Tribune marveled at their "expressiveness and virtuosity". The players were classically trained, and there is an element of 'chamber jazz' in their music.

Dave Friedman, Karl Berger, Tom van der Geld, Wolfgang Lackerschmid – Vibes Summit
This exceptional live 1979 radio date features four of the top international vibraphone players of the period. Karl Berger was a major figure in the New York Avant-garde scene, playing and recording with Don Cherry, and, along with Ornette Coleman, founded the Creative Music Studio. Dave Friedman studied at Julliard under the noted modern classical composer Luciano Berio, Tom van der Geld was founding member of Children at Play and recorded with ECM, and Wolfgang Lackerschmid is known for his duets with Chet Baker. Add a crack bass and drum accompaniment that brings out the best in the band.

Don 'Sugar Cane' Harris, Jean-Luc Ponty, Nipso Brantner, Michal Urbaniak – New Violin Summit
Recorded live at the '71 Berlin Festival, this amazing album highlights four iconic jazz violinists. Jean Luc Ponty 'plays violin like Coltrane plays saxophone.' The Frenchman transported violin playing into the world of modern jazz. Called 'the Jimmy Hendrix of the violin', Don 'Sugarcane' Harris's work with Frank Zappa, John Lee Hooker, and Little Richard affirmed that he was the violin master of jazz-inflected rock 'n roll. Michal Urbaniak played a major role in the development of jazz fusion in the 70's and 80's, blending Polish folk music with the funk and fusion of the Big Apple, and Nipso Brantner was renowned for his swing style in the tradition of Reinhardt and Grappelli. The four are accompanied by a top international rhythm section.
