Dave Liebman Celebrates 70th Birthday with NYC Performances

NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman, considered "one of the most important saxophonists in contemporary music" (Downbeat Magazine) will be celebrating his 70th birthday this September 4th, 2016. To mark the occasion, Liebman will be performing at two major New York venues: Birdland Jazz Club and Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola.

On August 23rd though the 27th, Liebman will return to Birdland, where he has performed regularly for the past two decades, to play the distinctively angular music of Thelonious Monk alongside fellow jazz gurus John Abercrombie, Steve Swallow and Joey Baron.

Then on September 9th through the 11th, the birthday festivities continue at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola with Liebman's newest group, Expansions. Featuring saxophonist Matt Vashlishan, pianist Bobby Avey, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Alex Ritz alongside Liebman, Expansions' repertoire traverses elements of free jazz in addition to complex rearrangements of jazz standards.

To ring in his 70th, Liebman has continued his tireless schedule of touring and recording; most recently, Expansions made its debut at the Newport Jazz Festival. In addition, Liebman recently collaborated with Kenny Werner, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette to record "Fire", the third part of Liebman's four part element suite (previous recordings include "Water" with Pat Metheny and "Air" with Walter Quintus). Meanwhile, Liebmans latest release "Balladscapes", a duo record with pianist Richie Beirach, has been receiving worldwide acclaim.
