Focus on MPS vibraphone - Jay Hoggard, Wolfgang Schlüter, Gunter Hampel

This time we have got a focus on MPS vibraphone players.

Gunter Hampel – Out Of New York – The Music Of Gunter Hampel
A group of Avant-guard giants – this NYC quartet on multi-instrumentalist/composer Gunter Hampel's 2nd MPS album was to become the core of the various groups that Hampel would assemble over the next decade. It also signals the beginning of a life-long musical and personal relationship between Hampel and vocal innovator Jeanne Lee, whose work includes classic recordings with pianist Ran Blake, Archie Shepp and Mal Waldron. Hampel's recordings with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers, Sunny Murray, and Willem Breuker attest to his standing in the front line of the new music. Perry Robinson redefined the way clarinet was played through his work with the likes of Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra and Carla Bley; at the time of this album bassist Jack Gregg had already worked with Gabor Szabo, Jack DeJohnette and Harold Land.

Christoph Spendel & Wolfgang Schlüter Group – September Memories
For this 1981 album, their 2nd for MPS, pianist Christoph Spendel and vibraphonist Wolfgang Schlüter assembled a finely-tuned quartet of top-flight musicians. Spendel has worked in groups that have included Didier Lockwood, Lonnie Plaxico and Alphonse Mouzon, and Schlüter is acknowledged as one of the most important European vibraphonists of his generation. Virtuoso Austrian bassist Adelhard Roidinger worked with Achim Kühn, Karl Berger, and Anthony Braxton; drummer Ralf Hübner was a member of the legendary Albert Mangelsdorff Quartet.

Anthony Davis & Jay Hoggard – Under The Double Moon
Pianist Anthony Davis and vibraphonist Jay Hoggard were among a group of celebrated young lions in the American East Coast new jazz scene of the mid-1970's and early 80's. By their early 20's they were deeply involved in New England's creative music scene, playing and jamming with the likes of Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton, and Ed Blackwell. It was during this period that the two began their work together. By the late 70's they were busy with their own working groups. Davis was also recording and touring with Smith, David Murray, and George Lewis; Hoggard was on the road with Chico Freeman. Here you have the duo album they always wanted to record.
