BOSSABRASIL at Birdland

Latin Grammy winner, Leny Andrade, is acknowledged as Brazil's true Jazz
Singer. Her voice is a deep, husky instrument of such dramatic depth that, as Stephen Holden wrote in the New York Times, "seems to well up from the center of the earth". Andrade blends jazz with samba, bossa nova, and bolero. Her improvisational brilliance and vocal fireworks have led many writers to compare her to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Tony Bennett says "Leny Andrade is the Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil".

Andrade burst onto the scene in 1961 with the RCA album A SENSACAO (The Sensational) and since then has made over 30 recordings which gained her fame throughout Latin America, notably in Mexico where she lived for some years. She also developed a loyal following in the U.S. when Producers, Ettore Stratta and Pat Philips started bringing her to New York to perform at Birdand. Another of her big fans is the great Latin/Jazz artist, Paquito D'Rivera, as well as brilliant Brazilian guitarist, Romero Lubambo .

At Birdland, she will perform with the Roni Ben-Hur Trio with Itaiguara Brandao on Bass and her long-time drummer Helio Schiavo . She has recorded with Ben-Hur for Motema Records, "Algria de Viver" (Joy of Living), recently released. This is the ultimate Andrade, singing Brazilian classics . Roni Ben-Hur, guitarist, was born in Israel to a family that had migrated from Tunisia. Due to his varied background, he successfully combines classical Spanish repertoire with Brazilian music and jazz. They met recently and musically fell in love. It will be a treat for all to see these remarkable artists this year for' BossaBrasil' at Birdland, a new home for Brazilian music, Produced by Pat Philips
