Focus on German MPS artists (Part 1) - Peter Herbolzheimer et al.

This March we have got a focus on German MPS artists. Check them out:

Rhythm Combination & Brass Peter Herbolzheimer – Wide Open
German writer/music critic Siegried Schmidt-Joos described RC&B founder Peter Herbolzheimer's jazz-feel as "a sackful of soul". The band offers up a full bag of brassy tricks on their second MPS recording of 1973 (see WAITAMINUTE). The amphibian in Frog Dance was definitely Latin, as the piece gets a jolt with an electrifying solo by trumpeter Mikkelborg. With a bold and brassy arrangement and soulful solos, That Old Bus Smell reeks of funk, whereas Babo takes the fusion trail with trombonist Jiggs Whigham going electric.

Rhythm Combination & Brass Leader: Peter Herbolzheimer – Waitaminute
Romanian born trombonist, composer/arranger Peter Herbolzheimer led one of the most innovative, successful European big bands, Rhythm Combination &Brass. Composed of international stars, the band zeroed in on a big brassy sound, usually incorporating a single reed player – the great saxophonist Herb Geller. Recorded in early 1973, the album exemplifies RC&B's playing during its early innovative period, when blues, gospel, bop and rock dominated. The lushly orchestrated Waitaminute features stellar solos by Geller on flute and Danish trumpet great Palle Mikkelberg before the music ascends into collective improvisation and a return to the theme.

Sigi Busch – Age Of Miracles
Sigi Busch rates as one of Germany's premier bassists, having worked with a wide range of players, from Ben Webster to Woody Shaw and John Zorn. Age of Miracles was Busch's first album, and what an album! Two jazz greats, American alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano, and German keyboardist Wolfgang Dauner, as well as the fantastic German trombonist Ed Kröger and eclectic Danish drummer Kasper Winding take part in this inaugural flight. The album profiles Busch's hardcore jazz side with sophisticated compositions and outstanding interactive play.
