The Roots Of Flamenco: Andaluz And Arabic Music And Dance At City Winery Chicago On March 7

Join international musician Ronnie Malley and Las Guitarras de Espaсa for an evening of Arabo-Andalusian and Flamenco music at City Winery, 1200 W Randolph St. in Chicago, on Monday, March 7 at 8PM CST. The collaboration explores music from the shared cultural history of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. The special program will also feature flamenco and Indian dance with music from the ensemble Surabhi featuring Sara Ranganathan (veena), Chihsuan Yang (violin, erhu) and Carlo Basile (guitar), just returning from Shanghai, Taiwan, and Hanoi to explore music from the Silk Road tradition.

Ronnie Malley is a musician, theatrical performer, producer, and educator. He has collaborated with artists internationally and has composed for and consulted on projects in music, theater, and film. His recent credits include Ziryab, The Songbird of Andalusia, The Secret Garden, The Jungle Book, The Sultan's Dilemma, The White Snake, At the Gate, Modou: The Hang Player, and Jon and Davy. He performs with the music groups Allos Musica, Duzan Ensemble, Lamajamal, and Surabhi. Malley is also a faculty member at the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Chicago Academy for the Arts, and an artist/researcher with Chicago Arts Partnership in Education.

Las Guitarras de Espaсa is a Spanish guitar-influenced world music ensemble founded by guitarist Carlo Basile. The ensemble has released five CDs to critical acclaim and has performed throughout the US at concerts, universities and major festivals such as SXSW. The Chicago Tribune dubbed the ensemble's work as "brilliant." Basile's guitar work has been featured in various commercial radio and television spots. Most recently, Basile has composed and performed music for theater including Steppenwolf and Lookingglass Theaters. He was the featured musician in the Lookingglass Theater production of Rick Bayless in Cascabel, in which the Chicago Sun-Times called him a "masterful guitarist." Las Guitarras percussionist Bob Garrett has also recently performed in the new musical by Sting, The Last Ship. Chihsuan Yang was recently awarded the prestigious Three Arts Award for Chicago artists.
