James Emery/John Stowell Contemporary Jazz String Quartet at SUNY Orange

Internationally recognized guitarists James Emery and John Stowell are playing in concert on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 8pm in the Orange County Trust Company Great Room in Kaplan Hall at SUNY Orange. They are teaming up with two great jazzmen, violinist Rob Thomas and bassist Tony Marino for an evening of modern jazz.

The James Emery/John Stowell Contemporary Jazz String Quartet will perform material from the modern jazz tradition, original works, and collectively improvised material. "Improvisation is key and is central to everything we play, " states Emery. "Each of the performers has developed his own personal and identifiable expression, " he continues.

When they play, each of these uniquely talented musicians speaks through his instrument. They improvise and in so doing, they create music. Their instruments are their vehicles of communication as they captivate their audience.

James Emery inspires audiences with his eloquent playing of his handcrafted acoustic guitar. He has been described as "one of the world's finest guitarists" by allaboutjazz.com. In addition, he has performed his works in over 25 countries worldwide. His celebrated recordings have been described as "innovative and imaginative" and "utterly distinctive" by the Penguin Guide to Jazz.

John Stowell is an electric jazz guitarist, but he has a fondness for acoustic guitars as well. "John Stowell's approach to harmony is uniquely his own, " according to Just Jazz Guitar. A virtuoso soloist, Stowell holds his guitar in a diagonal position, which facilitates playing close, piano-like voicings more comfortably. He tours, records, and teaches internationally.

Rob Thomas is widely considered to be one of the most original, technically adept, and powerful violinists playing jazz and contemporary music. JazzTimes calls him "a violinist of exceptional creative resources...riveting as a solo voice." Thomas enthralls listeners with his 5-string violin.

Tony Marino plays acoustic and electric bass with versatility and a wide range of musicality affording him opportunities to accompany and record with numerous artists from folk to pop. Marino's use of body language while playing the upright bass puts a spotlight on the instrument. His pleasurable liquid tones enhance the group's direction.
