MPS Records: Archie Shepp, Rob McConnell, Albert Mangelsdorff

There are four new MPS re-issues this week. Check them out:

Archie Shepp - Live At The Donaueschingen Music Festival
An episodic free jazz classic. Saxophonist Archie Shepp's sound encompasses traces of Ben Webster, table-jumping, shouting r&b tenor players, and the explorations of the '60's avant-garde, enveloping them into his own unmistakable sound filled with passion, pain, anger, and a dazzling beauty. Accompanied by Roswell Rudd and Grachan Monchur the two trombonists who worked in his greatest groups, as well as Jimmy Garrison, bassist in John Coltrane's legendary quartet, and drummer Beaver Harris, Shepp and co explore the outer edges, at the same time digging into the fecund ground of swing, bop, and r&b. By the way, when you hear a tailgating Avant-Dixie trombone style, that's Roswell. Grachan is the mellower of the two.

Albert Mangelsdorff - Trombirds
German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff chose the trombone because he felt it came closest to the sound of the human voice. He amplified this idea with multiphonics – play one tone, sing another, thereby creating chords. His use of multiphonics broadened the possibilities of the instrument, and his playing catapulted Albert onto the international stage. His solo album Trombirds is a demonstration of multiphonics in full flight.

Albert Mangelsdorff - Wild Goose
Free jazz encounters the English folk song. With his perceptive arrangements, Saxophonist-arranger-composer Joki Freund, a major force in German post-war jazz, captures and combines the atmospheres of both genres. English couple Colin Wilkie and Shirley Hart began as wandering troubadours, and traveled on to become a mainstay on the bourgeoning European folk scene of the '60's. The core of the accompanying Hessen Radio Jazz Ensemble is trombone icon Albert Mangelsdorff's Quintet, a group that changed the shape of German jazz in the 1960's.

Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass - Tribute
Award-winning Trombonist-arranger-composer Rob McConnell and his Boss Brass big band was a fixture on the Canadian jazz scene. The group was composed of Canada's premiere jazz musicians, and many of their over two dozen albums have become collectors' items for big band enthusiasts world-wide. Tribute was the second of three albums released by MPS. The album contains the compositions of six major musicians, all of whom "…were taken from us in the prime of their lives and careers" (McConnell).
