Maverick Concerts: Marc Black & Warren Bernhardt, Sept. 12th 8pm

Maverick Concerts, the oldest continuous summer chamber music festival in America, opens the final weekend of its hundredth season with a concert by singer-songwriter Marc Black and composer/jazz pianist Warren Bernhardt, whose combined artistry creates a uniquely Woodstock sound.

The concert is on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8:00 pm.

The program will consist of original material by both Marc and Warren, as well as some classics, including, in honor of Maverick's centennial, a number of popular songs written one hundred years ago.

All Maverick concerts are held in the historic concert hall, 120 Maverick Road, Woodstock, N.Y. 12498. The hall was hand-built in 1916 in a woodland glade just two miles from the center of town.

About the Players

Marc Black is an eclectic folk-rocker who carries on the Woodstock tradition of dealing with life, with all its social and political challenges, one song at a time. His songs and fingerstyle playing have been hailed by noted folk artist Happy Traum as "timeless, " with "deep grooves, excellent playing, and top-notch guitar and vocals." Marc's song subjects range from his love for Rachel Maddow to good coffee and just about everything in between. He has performed and recorded with many luminaries including Pete Seeger, Art Garfunkel, Rick Danko, and Levon Helm. Marc was named Folk Artist of the Year on ABC Radio's Fame Games. He has recorded more than a dozen CDs, including one "pick hit" in Billboard magazine and another that was recognized as a "minor masterpiece" by famed music producer John Hammond, Sr.

Warren Bernhardt began studying the piano at the age of five, and he concertized until he was twelve. At the University of Chicago, he delved into the rich traditions of Chicago jazz and blues and the fresh jazz improvisations of Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. Soon thereafter, Warren began touring with saxophonist Paul Winter, and has performed in New York since the early 1960s as a jazz pianist, accompanist, sideman, arranger, producer, and bandleader. Warren received the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science's Most Valuable Player Award for acoustic piano on four different occasions. He has toured and recorded with Jack DeJohnette, Clark Terry, Gerry Mulligan, Kenny Burrell, and Kazumi Watanabe, among others, and he has accompanied such great singers as Carly Simon, Tim Hardin, James Brown, Richie Havens, Don McLean, Linda Ronstadt, Patti LuPone, and Liza Minnelli. He has frequently toured with singer Art Garfunkel, and he played with Simon & Garfunkel on their "Old Friends" tours of the United States and Europe. In 2008, Warren recorded 2.0 with L'Image, the band he co-led in the 1970s. He and Marc recorded Champions of Love, an album of love songs, this past spring.
