Carol Saboya/Antonio Adolfo/Hendrik Meurkens "Copa Village" Cd Release Show

"Copa Village" presents the collaborative and formidable talents of three great Brazilian musicians, and demonstrates clearly the timeless blend of Jazz and Bossa Nova, continuing in its sumptuous evolution with some new harmonic and rhythmic concepts. The title derives from an era when on two different continents, Bossa Nova was thriving in Rio's Copacabana while Jazz was in the midst of the Bebop heyday in Greenwich Village — hence "Copa Village."

The album has already earned accolades from critics, and shot quickly to the top echelons of the JazzWeek chart.

"[A] super constellation of stellar musicians [in] a tribute largely to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, graced by the wonderful musicality of Ms. Saboya, backed by the virtuosity and emotional fullness of Antonio Adolfo and Hendrik Meurkens."

- Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Network

-Chip Boaz, Latin Jazz Corner

"This beautiful music flows in the Brazilian breeze, inducing smiles and soothing ears as it flies along. Saboya, Adolfo, and Meurkens prove to be a well-matched set of charmers, delivering seductive and stylish songs in seemingly effortless fashion."

More about the musicians:

A native of Rio de Janeiro and international vocal star, Carol Saboya is the daughter of Brazil's legendary pianist/composer Antônio Adolfo. Her discography includes an impressive 10 albums. Her 1998 debut album, "Dança da Voz, " won her Brazil's prestigious Brazilian Music Award for "Best

Brazilian New Female Vocalist." In 1999 she backed Tom Jobim on "Janelas Abertas".

She recorded on Sérgio Mendes's classic "Brasileiro, " and earned fame with the release

of her own next albums. Her most recent album, "Belezas, The Music of Ivan Lins and

Milton Nascimento" (2012), was her first release in the U.S. It was on Jazz Week charts

for multiple weeks, and was acclaimed by critics, receiving 4 stars from Downbeat

Magazine. Other awards include the Tabaíba de Oro award as best female vocalist in a

Festival in Spain and she has twice received the prestigious Brazilian International Press

Award in the U.S.

Pianist, composer, producer and arranger, Antônio Adolfo has long been one of Brazil's most revered

performers and educators, whose influence has been felt by a whole new generation of musicians. He has been among the elite of Rio de Janeiro's jazz scene for decades, where his prodigious talent was nurtured with the bossa nova movement of the 1960's, when he led his own trio and toured with legendary Brazilian singers, including Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento. He wrote songs that gained great success and were recorded by Sergio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Herb Alpert, Earl Klugh, Dionne Warwick, and others. He won two International Song Contests. A renowned pianist and teacher,

he established a prominent music conservatory in Rio de Janeiro, currently with 1, 300 students. Two of his recent releases were nominated for the 2014 Latin Grammy Awards.

At age 19, virtuoso instrumentalist and composer Hendrik Meurkens heard Toots Thielemans play harmonica, which revolutionized his musical life. His career has taken him from Brazil to Germany, then throughout Europe, performing, composing, recording, and touring extensively with his own ensembles as well as with legends Harry Sweets Edison and Buddy Tate. In 1989, he returned to Brazil to record "Samba Importado." In 1992, he signed with the U.S. Concord label, and the resulting six recordings established him as the first major new voice on the harmonica since Toots Thielemans. His 22 CDs have received rave reviews and established his unique style of Brazilian Jazz. Critics have recognized his incredible talent, listing him repeatedly in the Downbeat and Jazziz Polls. Meurkens has worked with Paquito D'Rivera, Oscar Castro-Neves, James Moody, Charlie Byrd, Ivan Lins, Monty Alexander, Dori Caymmi, Toninho Horta, Joyce, and Astrud Gilberto.
