Jazz Club of Sarasota To Recognize Bob Seymour at 35th Annual Sarasota Jazz Festival

The Jazz Club of Sarasota will recognize Bob Seymour, WUSF's popular jazz director and regional jazz advocate, during the 35 annual Sarasota Jazz Festival. Seymour will be presented with a plaque just before the Freddy Cole Quartet concert, Thursday, March 5, 7 p.m., at Riverview High School Performing Arts Center, 1 Ram Way, Sarasota.

Bob Seymour has been jazz director for WUSF 89.7 since 1981. His years with the NPR station also include working in the areas of news and classical music. Through the years, Seymour has interviewed leading figures in music and maintains a deep commitment to the jazz scene in Sarasota and the Tampa Bay region. He has been named a lifetime honorary member of the Jazz Club of Sarasota's board of directors, and is a founder and current president of the Tampa Jazz Club.

"I have such affection for the Jazz Club of Sarasota, dating back to its earliest days, " says Seymour. "As a resident of Sarasota in the late 70s, I became friends with Hal and Evelyn Davis and others who were on the ground floor, and recall having them on a talk show on WQSA to discuss this new idea. What a beautiful thing to see 35 years of unforgettable musical experiences built on that foundation – a real tribute to the staff and volunteers, the commitment of the artists, and this community that supports jazz performances. The Jazz Club of Sarasota sets the standard, and it's a real honor to be a part of it."

The Jazz Club of Sarasota presents its 35th annual Sarasota Jazz Festival, March 1-7. This year's lineup includes world-renowned pianist and composer Dick Hyman in concert with saxophonist and clarinetist Ken Peplowski and vocalist Kitt Moran; the Freddy Cole Quartet; vocalist Karla Harris, performing a live debut of "A Tribute to Brubeck" with the Ted Howe Trio; the Sarasota Jazz Project with John Lamb and June Garber; and jazz violinist Doug Cameron. This year's festival also includes the free "Jazz in the Park" kickoff concert at Phillippi Estate Park and the popular Jazz Trolley and Pub Crawl. Concert pianist ("Queen of the Keys") Lillette Jenkins-Wisner will be awarded this year's Satchmo Award for her outstanding contributions to jazz at the concert on March 7.

The 2015 Sarasota Jazz Festival is sponsored by The Jazz Cruise and by Sarasota County Tourist Development tax revenues. Evening concerts are at 7:30 p.m. at the Riverview High School Performing Arts Center, 1 Ram Way, Sarasota.
