Billy Strayhorn's 99th Celebrated at DROM

Join us in celebrating Billy Strayhorn's 99th birthday as two mesmerizing saxophonists display the diversity of Strayhorn's genius. Michael Hashim & The All Stars will open the show with a hard-swinging set of vintage Strayhorn classics and rarely performed works. Paul Carlon's La Rumba is a Lovesome Thing will follow with its unique Afro-Cuban look at the Strayhorn canon, reimagining Billy as a rumbero from Havana.

Michael Hashim & The All Stars (7:30PM)

Hashim's command of the saxophone, exciting stage presence and deep knowledge of the repertoire has brought him worldwide accolades through his work with the Widespread Depression Orchestra, jazz masters Roy Eldridge and Jo Jones, and his own leadership of the Billy Strayhorn Orchestra. Mike is joined tonight by Michael Howell on guitar, Jesse Gelber on piano, Kelly Friesen on bass, and Willard Dyson on drums.

"Mr. Hashim is enthusiastically and ruggedly swinging" – John S. Wilson, The New York Times

Paul Carlon's La Rumba is a Lovesome Thing: (9PM)

Fresh from the Jazz.n.Caz Festival in upstate New York, Carlon's 11-piece ensemble will take you on a fantastic journey through the Strayhorn repertoire, seeing it as a vehicle for reinterpreting guaguancó, son, bomba, and timba. Featuring sultry vocals, the tres guitar, horns for days, and subtle Afro-Caribbean rhythms, La Rumba is a Lovesome Thing celebrates the life and work of Billy Strayhorn.

"Mr. Carlon's treatment is the best kind of fresh take on classic material, rendered with a perfect balance of adoration and irreverence that never misses the mark." - Will Friedwald, The Wall Street Journal
