Polish jazz and experimental music fest visits İstanbul

This week, İstanbul is home to JEMP, a critically acclaimed festival called "Jazz and Experimental Music from Poland, " as part of the 2014 cultural program celebrating 600 years of Polish-Turkish diplomatic ties.

Running from Oct. 19 through 26 in various venues across the city, the festival offers an eclectic mix of free jazz, electroacoustic improvisation, deconstructed classical Ottoman music and other experimental styles. In addition to concerts, the eight-day festival will showcase installations and sound art projects, all involving cross-border partnerships, according to a press release its organizers issued last week.

The İstanbul program is the fourth edition of the festival, which previously visited London, and in an "exciting departure from the first three editions, this year's program consists mostly of specially commissioned collaborations between Polish and Turkish musicians or artists, " the press release read.

The festival opened Sunday with a performance at Arkaoda by Piotr Kurek joined by İstanbul's Ekin Fil.

On Thursday at Salon İKSV, Turkish musicians Umut Çağlar and Korhan Futacı of the pioneering free improvisation band KonstruKt will share the same stage with Polish musicians Rafal Mazur and Dominik Strycharski.

Other highlights include contemporary music ensemble Kwartludium, collaborating with Çağlayan Yıldız to "deconstruct" works by Polish-Ottoman musician Wojciech Bobkowski (known as Ali Ufki). "Songs of Resistance, " a site-specific performance by Zorka Wollny, will explore the themes of fury and anger through their unique combination of live performance, collaborating with two local choirs.
