Marianne Matheny-Katz New CD & Upcoming Live Appearances

"Somewhere in Paradise marks the solo debut of Marianne Matheny-Katz, a captivating singer, who's been a fixture in Baltimore for more than a decade. She possesses a quintessential jazz voice, which she enlivens with lissome, conversational phrasing."
—John Murph

"Like many memorable jazz singers, her voice has the flexibility of a beautiful horn. Think Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith."

Warm and charismatic, Marianne Matheny-Katz is one of the Mid-Atlantic's busiest jazz vocalists. James Nash of Music Monthly compared the Baltimore based songstress to Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith and likened her pure sound to that of "a beautiful horn."

Mentors such as Jay Clayton, J.D. Walter and the late Ronnie Wells helped guide her artistic development and prepare her to step masterfully into her role as producer of Somewhere in Paradise. She has built a substantial set for the sophisticated ear, dressing beloved jazz tunes in new and noteworthy arrangements.

The jazz maven has clocked untold hours at the microphone since her early years as a New York folksinger. In the 1990s she leapt onto the blues scene. She entered the millennium as an award-winning jazz singer, twice taking second place in the prestigious Billy Holiday Jazz competition in Baltimore.

Her new disc celebrates Charm City's fertile jazz scene by featuring such heavyweights as reed players Todd Marcus, Tim Green, Craig Alston; bassist Eric Wheeler; pianist Vince Evans; drummer Eric Kennedy; and triple-threat jazz superstar, Warren Wolf on vibraphone, piano and drums. Philadelphia based trumpeter Terell Stafford is also featured.
