Donald Harrison headlines Loyola's Jazz Underground series

Award-winning saxophonist Donald Harrison will lead an ensemble of Loyola University New Orleans jazz students in a program of classic standards and iconic original compositions Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Old U.S. Mint, located at 400 Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans.

Harrison's New Orleans musical roots run deep. His father, who was a Big Chief of a local Mardi Gras Indian tribe, raised Harrison in the local traditions of brass bands, parades, modern jazz, rhythm and blues, funk, classical, world and dance music.

For his album "Indian Blues, " Harrison created "Nouveau Swing, " a style of jazz that merges modern R&B, hip-hop, soul and rock music with Afro-New Orleans traditional sounds. The critically acclaimed album deepened Harrisonʼs commitment to maintaining the offshoot rituals, call and response chants and drumming of Congo Square.

Harrison has performed with an array of illustrious musicians, including Art Blakey, Lena Horne, Dr. John, Miles Davis, Notorious BIG, Dr. Lonnie Smith, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others.
