Jazzmeia Horn sings in Harlem

In her first performance in Manhattan since her triumphant victory at the James Moody Festival, young vocalist Jazzmeia Horn fronts a trio on Dec. 8th at MIST Harlem for the Renaissance Gospel & Jazz Brunch.

She began singing in church since the age of 3 in Dallas, Texas under the watchful eye of her choir-singing mother and her grandmother, a church organist who gave Jazzmeia her name. In 2012 she was the Rising Star winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Contest; on Nov. 10, 2013 she won the contest outright, impressing onlookers with her sassy soulfulness, and wowing judges Al Jarreau, Janis Siegel, Gretchen Parlato, Gary Walker, and Larry Rosen with her exuberance and vocal range. A recent graduate of the New School Jazz Program, Horn is drawing comparisons to Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter.

For the 12 noon and 2 pm sets on Dec. 8th, Ms. Horn will be joined by Tadataka Unno on piano and Nori Noraoka on bass.
